Satire - Don's Diary

June 07 9.00am

Bassett excellent as usual in this morning's Dom-Post. Right on the money with "Bumper-sticker sloganeering doesn't make for responsible public policy." Showed Jen Le who said I must find a bumper wide enough to put it on.

June 07 5.30pm

Clipped and copied Bassett's column for Richard, Murray and Gerry. Richard noted with relief that Bassett had not mentioned billboards, Murray called the printer and Gerry thought the stickers would probably fit on the bumper of a Humvee. Not sure what that is but we now have five on order as campaign buses, thanks to our generous friend in New York.

June 08 11.00pm

Called Winston to congratulate him on his interview with Kim Hill tonight. It was supposed to be me but Richard got Face-to-Face mixed up with Eye-to-Eye and sent an email saying I would only go on programmes with people of equal stature, like Helen or President Bush, for branding reasons. TVNZ very good about it and offered me a slot on Agenda, Jonathan Hunt's favourite programme (although can't say that's much of a recommendation).

June 09 11.00am

Spent morning trying to adapt my Monetary Conditions Index (MCI) model for responsible public policy formulation (RPPF). Made some progress in using it to determine ideal size of public service with 20 peas equal to 100 police, one corned beef slice per 20 nurses and half a roll of Gladwrap representing 100 teachers.

June 11 10.00am

Up at 5.30 to iron tie ready for interview with Simon Dallow. Stupid boy, kept asking if I stood by my statement that we would not be crossing any bridges or counting any chickens until after election night. Didn't even notice when I got it mixed up once and said we would not be counting any bridges or crossing any chickens.

June 12 1.30pm

Call from Audrey Young asking if I stood by my promise to give everyone tax cuts by April 1. Don't remember saying this but "tax cuts for all" sounds like responsible public policy formulation to me. Rang Murray who said he knew of a warehouse full of ACT's billboards promising "A Tax Cut For Every Worker" that they probably would not be needing this time round.
